“Every year we see small businesses run into avoidable issues because they haven’t kept accurate records, reported all their income or managed their cashflow effectively”
Angela Allen, ATO Assistant Commissioner
Staying compliant with ATO rules is essential for running a healthy and sustainable business. When your business meets its tax obligations, you reduce the risk of penalties, avoid unnecessary stress and keep your operations running smoothly.
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is encouraging small businesses to take a proactive approach. By staying organised and across your obligations, you can avoid many of the common issues that lead to fines and enforcement action.
How to stay compliant with ATO rules
Here are five key ways to help your business stay compliant with ATO rules and remain in good standing.
1. Stay on top of your ATO debts
The ATO expects businesses to actively manage their tax debts. Engaging early – whether that’s setting up a payment plan or making prepayments – can make your obligations more manageable and reduce the likelihood of enforcement action.
2. Separate accounts for separate obligations
Having dedicated bank accounts for GST and PAYG withholding helps protect your cashflow. It ensures these funds are set aside and not used for day-to-day expenses, so you are always prepared for BAS lodgements and other payments.
3. Good records, good business
Accurate recordkeeping is a legal requirement. Moving away from manual ‘shoebox’ methods to digital systems and ATO online services reduces errors and makes it easier to report your financial information correctly.
4. Prepare for Payday Super
From 1 July 2026, Payday Super will require employers to pay Superannuation Guarantee contributions on each payday. Reviewing your payroll systems now will help ensure you are ready for more frequent payments and reporting.
5. Closing or winding down your business
If you are closing your business, it’s important to meet all final obligations. This includes cancelling your ABN, lodging final tax returns and settling employee entitlements to avoid future compliance issues.
Stay compliant and avoid unnecessary issues
The ATO recommends working with registered tax practitioners to ensure you meet your obligations. Staying compliant with ATO rules is much easier when you have the right systems and support in place.
